20th Century American Literature, Science Fiction, Marxism, Philosophy
I am interested in 20th century hopes and anxieties about historical, political, and technological change, especially as represented in American science fiction of the “New Wave” and after. In particular, I am interested in the development of notions such as “system,” “complexity,” and “information” in the postwar period, and the way in which metaphors drawn from areas such as biology and computation help both to shape our conceptions of, and to aid our thinking about, the increasingly complex world system of late capitalism (from global supply chains and financial crises to epidemics and ecological catastrophes to “social networks” and ubiquitous personal computing). I am also interested in political economy, psychoanalysis, and the history of religion and religious thought.
