“Thinking Through Place: Cognition, Geography, and Race in the Early Modern World”

Abstract:

In this talk, I trace the critical intervention and the central claims of my first book, Thinking Through Place on the Early Modern English Stage (under contract with Oxford University Press). Through a brief discussion of Shakespeare’s King Lear, I offer, as well, a demonstration of the methodology that I develop within the book to advance my argument. In the second half of the talk, I suggest how my interest in the relationship between place and cognition has led to a second project on race in the early modern Atlantic, tentatively titled Shakespeare and the Origins of Whiteness.
