Never Allowed for Property: Layli Long Soldier and an Indigenous Radical Tradition

By:
Hannah Manshel
Doctoral Candidate in English

This talk reads Layli Long Soldier’s book of poetry Whereas (2017) as a decolonial project that conjures into being a world not organized around property. Written in response to the 2009 Congressional Apology to Indigenous Peoples, Whereas uses poetic form to both reveal the emptiness of the apology and, in turn, to deactivate a legal system that dispossesses Native people by turning land into property. I read Whereas in light of Cedric Robinson’s theorization of the Black Radical Tradition, and argue that Long Soldier puts forth an Indigenous Radical Tradition that, after Robinson, “never allowed for property.”
