Rise Axelrod  (Professor of English Ph.D., University of California, Los Angeles) is a specialist in rhetoric and composition. Her research centers on applied composition studies, with special interests in academic discourse, the connection between reading and writing, the composing process, and genre theory. Professor Axelrod has written three textbooks, including the recent publications of Axelrod and Cooper's Concise Guide to Writing (third edition) and Reading Critically, Writing Well (sixth edition). She is working on new research studies, including The Harcourt Introduction to Poetry , which she hopes will revolutionize the teaching of poetry in the same way that her textbook, The St. Martin's Guide to Writing , revolutionized the teaching of composition. Another planned book, Theory Toolkit , will explore the ways theoretical frameworks are used to develop academic arguments in the humanities and social sciences.
