WAYS TO SATISFY THE ENTRY-LEVEL WRITING REQUIREMENT

BEFORE enrolling full-time at UCR:

There are several ways to satisfy the ELWR before students become full-time students on a UC campus.

  1. Receiving a score of 680 or above on the College Board SATII: Writing Subject Test or the College Board SAT Reasoning test, writing section.

  2. Receiving a score of 3, 4, or 5 on the College Board Advanced Placement Testing English. In addition, a score of 3 satisfies the ENGL 001A requirement; a score of 4 or 5 satisfies both the ENGL 001A and ENGL 001B requirement.

  3. Receiving a score of 5, 6, or 7 on the International Baccalaureate Higher Level Examination in English, Language A only. In addition, a score of 5 satisfies the ENGL 001A requirement. A score of 6 or 7 satisfies both the ENGL 001A and ENGL 001B requirements.

  4. Receiving a score of 30 or better on the ACT Combined English/Writing test.

  5. Receiving a passing grade on the UC Analytical Writing Placement Examination (AWPE) administered statewide by the UC system on the second Saturday in May. To take the May exam, students must receive a ticket that allows them access to a designated testing center; for information about getting your ticket, please call 800-839-8507. The ticket will be sent either from the UC President’s Office or from Pearson, the company in charge of administering the examination.

  6. Completing with a grade of C or better a 4 quarter-unit or 3 semester-unit college-level course in English composition (equivalent to UCR ENGL 001A), taken at another institution before the student enters UCR, and judged acceptable by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. To find out whether a course at a certain campus is acceptable, go to www.assist.org. Passing this course satisfies both the ELWR and the ENGL 001A requirements. Since ENGL 001A is the first course in the Freshman Composition sequence, students who choose this option should already be able to write well enough to be successful in a college-level writing course. If students are interested, they should take advantage of these courses over the summer since this option is not available following full-time enrollment.

  7. Completing with a grade of C or better a preparatory writing course at a CSU or community college campus, and then retaking and passing the AWPE at UCR in September. The course should be completed in time to submit evidence of a passing grade to the UCR Basic Writing Office one week prior to the first day of the fall quarter. Students should submit evidence of passing a passing grade along with a note including their name, student ID number, and a request to be added to the September exam roster. Once the grade report is approved, students receive permission to retake the AWPE. (A photocopy of a grade report is sufficient and can be mailed, along with a note, to Laurie Petty, Department of English, UC Riverside, Riverside, CA 92521, or brought to the Basic Writing office, which is located in HMNSS 1102. Call 951-827-1384 for directions to the office. For further information about this option or the place and time of the re-test, contact Laurie at Laurie.Petty@ucr.edu.) If students are interested, they should take advantage of these courses over the summer since this option is not available following full-time enrollment.

  8. Completing with a C or better one of the following summer courses offered at UCR before beginning classes in the fall (course placement for the five-week class is based upon the results of the AWPE):

    1. a ten-week, five-unit ELWR course (four hours per week) at UCR from June 23 through August 30, 2008;

    2. a five-week, five-unit ELWR course (eight hours per week) at UCR from July 28 through August 30, 2008;

    3. a five-week, six-unit Summer Bridge ELWR course at UCR (sixteen hours per week), from July 28 through August 30, 2008; this course involves additional tutoring and information about the transition into the college experience; www.summerbridge.ucr.edu

    See the UCR summer session web site at www.summer.ucr.edu for information about all summer options at UCR.

  9. Completing with a grade of C or better an Entry Level Writing Requirement course during the summer at another UC campus.
