WAYS TO SATISFY THE ENTRY-LEVEL WRITING REQUIREMENT

AFTER enrolling full-time at UCR:

Students who have not satisfied the ELWR before beginning as full-time students must enroll in one of the following courses during their first quarter on campus. The Director of Basic Writing determines the appropriate course based on the students’ AWPE exams, and placements are made available electronically.

BWST 003 – Basic Writing, English as a Second Language

• This course prepares students for English Writing 004/4D
• Six units: three of lecture, two of workshop, one of discussion
• S/NC grading only

ENGL 004/4D – English Writing

• Must be passed with a C or above to satisfy the ELWR
• Repeated if not passed with C or above
• Five units: four lecture units and one unit of discussion
• Letter grade only for lecture - ENGL 004 (NO S/NC)
• Discussion is S/NC only

ENGL 005/5D – Ideas in Conflict

• Must be passed with a C or above to satisfy the ELWR
• Repeated if not passed with C or above
• Five units: four lecture units and one unit of discussion
• Letter grade only for lecture - ENGL 005 (NO S/NC)
• Discussion is S/NC only
